SWITCH TO CLEANER FUELS

Because of climate change, concerns about running out of oil, and rising gas prices, there is growing interest in alternative fuels. Potential substitutes for gasoline include hydrogen, liquefied petroleum gas, compressed natural gas, and biofuels.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is hyped as the fuel of the future because it can be used in fuel cell vehicles, producing only water and heat as by-products. Like electricity, hydrogen is an energy carrier rather than an energy source like gasoline. The environmental pedigree of hydrogen depends on how it’s produced—whether from fossil fuels or renewable energy sources. Despite the construction of so-called hydrogen highways in California and British Columbia, there are few vehicles built to run on hydrogen and even fewer filling stations. There are unresolved concerns about cost, storage, performance, and infrastructure. However, even critics of hydrogen admit that continued research and development in hydrogen and transportation fuel cell technologies remains important because of their potential.
